It’s Time To Consider Your Consumption

Everywhere I look when I’m shopping, I see sale signs. It’s hard not to be drawn into these sales. Especially with the recent Black Friday and Christmas sales being forced upon us.

I thought I’d share my top tips on how not to over consume and the importance of a capsule wardrobe.

1. Educate yourself:

By educating yourself on overconsumption and the negative impacts it has on garment workers and the environment, then you will be less likely to overconsume. If you’re aware of the consequences overconsuming has on the environment, then purchasing from fast fashion brands will become less attractive. Fashion Revolution posts extremely insightful posts regarding overconsumption, read about them here.

2. Make a wish list:

I’m sure we are all guilty of impulse buying. It’s easy to buy clothes that we don’t actually need, especially in sale season. One way to prevent this is to make a wish-list of clothing items that you want. Therefore, you’ll be less likely to purchase unnecessary clothing items if they’re not on your list!

If items are on your wish list for a while, then you’ll know it will be a worthwhile and necessary purchase, rather than buying items spontaneously that you won’t end up wearing.

3. Re-wear your wardrobe:

Instead of buying new clothes, focus on what you already have in your wardrobe. One piece of clothing can be styled in so many ways. You can create so many outfits with what you already have in your wardrobe. So have a play around with the clothes you already own. This way you’ll find new outfits that will reduce your need to purchase new items of clothing. It is a win-win, as you’ll be saving money and discovering new outfits at the same time.

4. Unsubscribe from brand emails:

Brands can bombard you with promotional sale emails which can always increase temptation to purchase. Unsubscribing from emails as well as unfollowing brands on social media will prevent you from their sales being thrown in your face.

5. Don’t give in:

Finally, the main tip is not to give in! Don’t give in to all the sales and offers that fashion brands push on consumers. Brands constantly promote their new products and ranges. It’s easy to give in but to avoid over consuming you just have to have the willpower to say no.

Over consumption is a huge issue in today’s society and the fashion industry is the main contributor. It’s understandable to give into the sales and fast fashion brands but using these five tips you’ll hopefully find it easier to avoid over consuming and purchasing unnecessary clothing.
