Is Missguided's Restyld collection actually sustainable?

With many brands offering sustainable clothing, it becomes hard to know which brands are greenwashing or if they’re genuinely sustainable. Brands are producing ‘sustainable’ collections for show and to tick a box, rather for moral reasons. It is easy to get caught up in brands' persuasive marketing.

For today's post, it is focused on popular online retailer Missguided. The brand is known for its quick turnaround of producing on trend clothing and constantly releasing new styles and products to their online site.

However, despite being dominant in the fast fashion industry, they have recently launched a sustainable clothing range.

Missguided launched their range called ‘Restyld’, where the clothing has been made from recycled fibres. The aim for the collection is to put the planet first and the products are key staples so they will be long lasting in your wardrobe. The range currently has 102 items available to buy.

A white high neck vest is sold in their Restyld collection which is made from pre and post-consumer polyester waste. The production of these fibres uses less energy and water and produces less waste so is less damaging to the environment. This top was originally listed for £10 on Misguided but is currently on sale for only £5. It is questionable how sustainable the items in Missguided’s Restyld range are considering they are being sold at such a low price point.

Although it is a step in the right direction, the rest of Missguided’s products are not made from eco-friendly materials. The rate that Missguided releases new clothing collections on their site is far from sustainable. With new clothing styles being released on the site daily, their Restyld sustainable collection is simply a tick in a box and a marketing ploy.

Unfortunately, Missguided have seen how consumers are becoming more concerned with sustainability so have created a so-called sustainable collection to appear that they care for the environment. However, this one sustainable collection of 102 styles does not excuse the thousands of new products Missguided lists on their website every single week.

What do you think about the Restyld collection?
