From screens to the streets: How fashion and film collide

We all know those films that sparked conversation amongst the masses. Mean girls, 13 going on 30, clueless. The list goes on. Throughout the years, films and fashion coincide as they have the power to create new and fresh trends that shape the fashion industry we know today.

Miniskirts, flowing hems and bright colours are all reminiscent of the late 90’s and early 2000’s which we have seen Which we have seen circulate recently through y2k trends however, films and media play a big part into why previous trends come back in style. Due to the introduction of popular social media platforms such as TikTok, it has been easier than ever before to see the integration of these styles into our daily lives. Not only this but TikTok allows for trends to be adopted at a quicker rate when compared to the previous decade.

An example of films influencing trends is Bridgerton. According to the independent, ‘In January 2021,

eBay UK reported a 39 per cent increase in searches for corset’ with harpers bazaar reporting a 1000% increase in searches for corsets. Furthermore, similar effects and patterns have occurred with the likes of Emily in Paris and the Netflix remake of the Addams family with Wednesday Addams. A 61% increase in colourful jumper searches and a 1000% increase in ‘Wednesday inspired outfits’ on Depop has occurred.

These few examples show how film and fashion collide with one another and how important they are for each other. Without fashion, film would not be as impactful as each outfit resembles a character. Each character halour palette. Vice versa, without film, many current fashion trends would simply not exist. Just like the trickle-down affect, styles from films and media integrate through our society, into fast fashion and designer markets. Whether it’s a boom in fashion corsets or colourful jumpers, there will be more iconic shows to come that start a new big trend.
