Fashion Revolution Week: How You Can Help
This week is an important week in the fashion calendar, and as you’re reading this, I’m sure that fashion revolution week is something you’re interested in supporting.
Taking part in events, donating to the cause, or showing your support is vital in making a change to the industry, I’d love to tell you more about how you can help.
Firstly, it’s important to understand the aims of Fashion Revolution Week and how it came about.
This year marks 10 years since the Rana Plaza disaster on the 24th of April 2013. The building in Bangladesh contained multiple clothing factories for brands such as Mango, Matalan, and Primark. Rana Plaza was reported to have cracks in the walls and there were multiple warnings that the building was unsafe to work in, however employees were still forced to work. On the morning of the 24th the building collapsed with more than 3,000 people inside killing 1,134 people and injuring more than 2,500.
The Fashion Revolution movement was inspired by this disaster in an aim to make a change to the industry and stop tragedies like this from happening again. This week supports the movements of the cause to strive towards a fashion industry that conserves and restores the environment, valuing people over growth and profit.
A small step is just as important as large-scale activism, and as individuals it is important to remember how valuable our voices and opinions are. This week is all about getting involved and supporting the cause and there are many ways you can do this, even with a busy schedule.
Here are some small steps we can all take this week.
DONATE:
Every little helps! Donating to the cause helps the movement make a real change. Donations go towards research, policy change and spreading the word to inspire others to make a difference.
EDUCATE:
Research into the movement helps widen support and spread the word. This week there are plenty of interactive and online events where you can learn more about the industry and the cause.
Check out Fashion Revolution’s events here: https://www.fashionrevolution.org/events/ Also, keep an eye out for local events in your area.
SIGN A PETITION
Petitions are important for making a change in policies and how people think. Signing a petition only takes a few minutes to complete and is free unless you choose to donate. Petitions help attract attention to a cause and prove credibility and support.
You can sign this petition below in support of the Good Clothes Fair Pay campaign, which is calling for living wage legislation across the garment, textile and footwear sector.
CONTRIBUTE TO THE CONVERSATION
Talk to your friends, post on social media, or get involved with local activists and campaigners. Spreading the word and getting people talking about the cause helps make a difference. The more people talk the less the industry can ignore a call for change.
This Fashion Revolution Week why not share your conversations with others. The charity is urging people to reach out to friends and family and have a conversation surrounding climate change. On their website you can submit and share the conversation, click the link below to get involved!
Thank you for reading.
