Can Sustainable Be Stylish?

When it comes to shopping sustainably, one common misconception is that sustainable fashion isn’t stylish.

This myth stems from consumers determining ‘stylish’ as what fast fashion brands are selling and the latest trends that will only stick around for a week or two.

Some consumers have the misconception that sustainable clothing is boring or not trendy due to the stigma around second-hand shopping. However, in recent years, second-hand shopping has become more popular and more consumers are shopping in charity shops, which shows this stigma is slowly being broken. However, some consumers still believe they can’t buy fashionable garments from shopping sustainably.

There are many ethical clothing brands that prove that sustainable clothing is trendy and fashionable. Here are a few of my favourites:

Lucy and Yak-

First is the ethical clothing company Lucy and Yak. Known for their dungarees and bold colours, they show that clothing can be both sustainable and trendy.

Any products that have small faults or are samples are sold on their Depop for a discounted price to ensure that no garments are wasted. This company has won many sustainable fashion awards, including being shortlisted for the Drapers Sustainable Fashion Awards, so they’re definitely a brand to have on your radar.

Reformation-

Clothing brand Reformation shows that sustainable fashion can be fashionable. They use low-impact materials and deadstock fabrics to create their products, which are sold in limited edition collections to minimise over-production and prevent waste. They sell a wide range of products and styles, from maxi dresses to activewear. Reformation proves that sustainable clothing is trendy and sophisticated. The brand is already a certified climate neutral company and aims to be climate positive by 2025.

Veja-

If you’re looking for sustainable footwear, then Veja has got you covered. Their shoes are made from organic and Fair-Trade materials. The shoes have the iconic ‘V’ on the side which comes in a range of colours and materials. I bought a pair of Veja’s a couple years ago and I’ve been obsessed with them ever since. They’re so comfy and such high quality, not only do I feel stylish wearing them, but it also feels rewarding knowing they're ethical.

With sustainability on the rise and more ethical brands emerging, there are plenty of brands to purchase from. They show that sustainable fashion is stylish and debunk the common myth that shopping ethically isn’t as trendy.
